How do they know where they’re going

  • Film titles

Working closely with director Daniel Brereton, I designed the opening titles as well as subtitle design for a short film, part of a series on the theme of mental health. The main and end titles sought to communicate some of the challenges with structure the subject of the film faces. We experimented with positioning subtitles to mirror the cadence of the narration, and complementing the visual dynamic of the frame.

Main titles

While the subject of the film tells their story, we are shown areas of their environment and led by their narration. The subtle movement and the pacing allow us to become fully immersed.

Constructing language

The design of the titles was all about constructing language. The person in the film shares their challenges with structure, and I wanted to explore this in the main and end titles. The animation was important, with spacing and punctuation is introduced first — highlighting the nature of the sentence — before revealing the main text.
